Fundamentals of Sound Design for Media

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of creating sound for various media. Students will explore the relationship of sound and music to video, film, animation, and video games. Students will learn how to produce effective audio tracks using live sound, MIDI synthesizers, digital effects and computer hard disk recording.

LEARNING OUTCOMES & ASSESSMENTS

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. Identify the fundamental principles of sound design for media including historical overview, key terms, and concepts of designing sound for various media.  This will be assessed through a multiple choice quiz.

  2. Create a music soundtrack for visual media.  This will be assessed through direct observation, scored with a rubric.

  3. Create and synchronize sound effects for visual media.  This will be assessed through direct observation, scored with a rubric.

  4. Record, edit, and sync dialogue to visual media.  This will be assessed through direct observation, scored with a rubric.

  5. Design and produce a complete soundtrack for visual media.  This will be assessed through direct observation, scored with a rubric.
