Hybrid and Alternative Fuels
AUTO C151
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introduction to fundamentals of hybrid and alternative
fuel vehicles and their role in today’s carbon based society. The
difference between AC/DC motors vs. gasoline engines will be explored.
Unique safety and service procedures for hybrid vehicles is also emphasized.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the role of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles in today’s
society and the difference between carbon-based and non-carbon based
energy sources as well as alternatives to carbon-based fuels. This will
be assessed by exam.
- Explain how oxygenated fuels can reduce CO exhaust emissions and the
advantages vs. disadvantages of various alternative fuels/fuel cells.
This will be assessed by exam.
- Describe the role and function of high-voltage, lead cell, and
absorbed glass batteries in hybrid electric vehicles. This will be
assessed by exam.
- Understand the operation of DC and AC electric motors and how they
work in hybrid electric vehicles. This will be assessed by exam.
- Describe the principles, parts, and components, as well as service
procedures for regenerative braking systems. This will be assessed by
exam.
- Understand the unique service and safety issues related to high
voltage systems including hazards while driving, moving, and hoisting a
hybrid electric vehicle. This will be assessed by exam.
- Explain the service procedures for Honda, Toyota, Ford and General
