Introduction to Computer Information Systems
CATALOG COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This survey class introduces the learner to uses of computers in business
and society through exploration of hardware, software, file management,
networks, digital media, the Internet, web page creation and business
software. Context and issues related to the computer industry as well as
information systems and design are presented. Group projects include
writing and presenting on a relevant topic utilizing business software and
research skills developed in class.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- identify the major components of hardware, software, and computing
systems and their respective networks.
- understand and demonstrate appropriate file management.
- demonstrate and describe the use of wise consumer practices in
purchasing computer hardware and software.
- explain and demonstrate elements of software management.
- understand and demonstrate basic skills using word processing,
spreadsheet, presentation, graphic and database software application
packages.
- describe and explain the process of developing a web page using HTML
and software packages that assist in the development of web pages.
- describe the social, legal and ethical implications of modern
computer use.
- evaluate the trends in the history of computers.
