Security + Fundamentals of Network Security
 

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course emphasizes the fundamental technical understanding of computer and network security principals.  Security + is a globally recognized certificate that validates a student’s knowledge in the implementation of practical hardware, software, network and Internet security. A successful candidate is prepared to take the Security+ certification exam. This course is ideal for prospective candidates who want to master practical network and computer security.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Prove an industry applicable knowledge of digital security concepts and best practices.  This will be measured by an exam.  
  2. Demonstrate proper computer and network security counter-measures, protect basic and advanced communications, and use cryptography and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to thwart attackers in a skill demonstration scenario.  This will be evaluated through lab reports and scored with a rubric.
  3. Discuss challenging technical concepts among a group of peers to arrive at a documented long-answer conclusion.  This will be assessed by project and scored by a rubric.
  4. Articulate security best practices that can be applied in a corporate setting.  This will be observed through a progress interview scored by faculty using a Likert scale.
  5. Demonstrate preparedness to take the Comp Tia Security+ IT certification exam.  This will be measured by a comprehensive final exam.
