ENGL C020 Literacy Skills

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to help students improve their reading and writing skills, learn sentence structures, gain an understanding of basic principles of grammar and spelling, develop their vocabulary, and learn ways to express ideas in short writings.

None

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. understand basic parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, etc.
  2. know simple spelling rules and usage conventions, such as capitalization, proper use of the period and apostrophe, how to double-space, etc.
  3. know sentence structures, including simple, compound, and complex sentences.
  4. understand basic principles of grammar.
  5. expand their vocabulary.
  6. have basic reading skills at the sentence level: phonics, word-recognition, and rudimentary comprehension.
  7. develop word attack strategies.
  8. improve their reading comprehension.
  9. learn suitable reading strategies for various kinds of reading materials.
