ENGL C030 Basic Writing Skills
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course teaches students ways to develop and organize
ideas in short writings, focusing on the importance of
coherent, unified, and well-developed paragraphs with topic
sentences and effective supporting detail. The course will
also cover how to build these paragraphs into short essays and
how to revise and edit for correctness. Major principles of
grammar will be reviewed.

Prerequisites: English C020 or placement at Level 4

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will
be able to:
- write coherent, unified, and well-developed paragraphs
with topic sentences and effective supporting details.
- organize paragraphs into short compositions (250-500
words) with clear if basic organization, thesis, relevant
supporting paragraphs, keywords, and topic sentences. It is
suggested that essays be based primarily on the student’s
personal experience.
- practice revision and editing techniques.
- identify and correct major errors in grammar (fragments,
comma splices, fused sentences, subject/verb agreement
errors, incorrect pronoun forms), although minor errors
(irregular comma use, e.g.) might be present.
- determine general versus specific statements, claims
versus support.
- gain an appreciation of writing as communication, and a
sense of audience.
- improve their spelling, word choice, and mechanics.
- recognize topics and main ideas of paragraphs and short
essays, both explicit and implied.
- determine major and minor supporting details in
paragraphs or short essays.
- identify transition words that indicate relationships
among ideas.
- relate reading material to their own lives, experiences,
and ideas.
