ENGL C092 Grammar and Punctuation Refresher

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed for students of all levels. Topics include recognizing sentence patterns, avoiding run-ons and fragments, knowing when to use the comma, correctly employing the minor punctuation marks of semicolon, colon, dash, and others. Some time will be spent on grammar’s relation to style and a brief history of the English language.

REQUISITES

Prerequisites: Writing level 2
Advisory: Reading level 2

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. Identify the basic grammar of sentences: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex.
  2. Recognize parts of speech and the structure of phrases.
  3. Find and fix major grammatical errors: run-ons, fragments, subject/verb agreement errors.
  4. Punctuate correctly using the comma.
  5. Punctuate correctly using the “minor” punctuation marks of semicolon, colon, dash, and apostrophe.
  6. Describe grammar’s relation to style and analyze passages for the way grammatical choices influence stylistic tone, texture, and atmosphere.
  7. Report basic information about the history of the English language.
