ENGL C111 Introduction to Types of Literature
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides students an introduction to the
analysis and interpretation of imaginative literature and
will develop students' ability to understand structure,
theme, and artistic purpose in works of poetry, drama, and
fiction.
REQUISITES
Advisory: Reading Level 1 and Writing Level 1.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to
- compare and contrast the major characteristics of
poetry, fiction, and drama. This will be assessed through a
series of questions, evaluated by a rubric, on the final
exam.
- understand the literary elements of plot, character,
point of view, theme, symbolism, style, tone, irony,
denotation and connotation, imagery, figurative language,
allusion, sounds, rhythm, and poetic forms. This will be
assessed through a series of questions, evaluated by a
rubric, on the final exam.
- interpret literature by applying literary elements,
decoding, querying, clarifying, and drawing inferences.
