ENGL C190 Art of Fiction

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces students to the variety, nature, and techniques of fictional narrative. Students will read and analyze short stories to better understand the function of plot, character, setting, imagery, theme, and point of view in narrative art.

REQUISITES

Advisory: Reading level 1, Writing level 1

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. explain the concepts of plot, character, setting, theme, imagery, and point of view in fiction
  2. analyze a wide variety of short stories for the uses of these elements in narrative design
  3. understand how the different uses of the elements contributes to meaning in particular stories
  4. explain the historical development of the short story
