ENGL C231 Survey of British Literature I: Beginnings to 1785

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course studies English literature from Anglo-Saxon times to the end of the eighteenth century.

REQUISITES

Advisory: Level 1 Reading and Level 1 Writing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. understand the literary elements of plot, structure, character, theme, and imagery.
  2. apply the literary elements of plot, structure, character, theme, and imagery to a specific literary work.
  3. describe major writers, works, and genres, such as epic and sonnet, as well as movements, such as medieval and restoration.
  4. explain the relation between historical context and literary elements.
