ENGL C231 Survey of British Literature I: Beginnings to
1785
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course studies English literature from Anglo-Saxon
times to the end of the eighteenth century.
REQUISITES
Advisory: Level 1 Reading and Level 1 Writing.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will
be able to
- understand the literary elements of plot, structure,
character, theme, and imagery.
- apply the literary elements of plot, structure,
character, theme, and imagery to a specific literary work.
- describe major writers, works, and genres, such as
epic and sonnet, as well as movements, such as
medieval and restoration.
- explain the relation between historical context and
literary elements.
