ENGL C235 Introduction to Shakespeare
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an introduction to Shakespeare's
works, including discussion and analysis of selected plays
(tragedies, comedies, and histories) and non-dramatic
poetry. Some attention may be given to the historical,
artistic, literary, theatrical, and social influences of
Renaissance England contributing to the development of
Shakespeare’s literary achievements.
REQUISITES
Advisory: Level 1 Reading and Level 1 Writing
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will
be able to
- understand the literary elements of plot, structure,
character, theme, and imagery.
- apply the literary elements of plot, structure,
character, theme, and imagery to Shakespeare’s works.
- describe the author’s major works and genres, such as
tragedy and history play, as well as his artistic
development.
- explain the relation between historical context,
literary sources, and literary elements in the artist’s
work.
