ENGL C241 Survey of American Literature I: Beginnings to 1865

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This literature course introduces students to American authors from the Colonial Period to the beginning of the twentieth century. The course emphasizes analyzing texts and studying the intellectual, social, and cultural history of Americans.

REQUISITES

Advisory: Level 1 reading and Level 1 writing

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. understand the literary elements of plot, structure, character, theme, and imagery.
  2. apply the literary elements of plot, structure, character, theme, and imagery to a specific literary work.
  3. describe major writers, works, and genres, such as the novel and essay, as well as movements, such as romanticism and realism.  
  4. explain the relation between historical context and literary elements.
