ENGL C242 Survey of American Literature II: 1865 to the
Present
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This literature course introduces students to American
authors from the 1865 to the present. The course emphasizes
analyzing texts and studying the intellectual, social, and
cultural history of Americans.
REQUISITES
Advisory: Level 1 reading and Level 1 writing
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the student
will be able to
- understand the literary elements of plot, structure,
character, theme, and imagery.
- apply the literary elements of plot, structure,
character, theme, and imagery to a specific literary work.
- describe major writers, works, and genres, such as novel
and satire, as well as movements, such as realism and
post-modernism.
- explain the relation between historical context and
literary elements.
