ENGL C249 Multi-Ethnic Literature

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course studies the contributions to American literature by African Americans, Latino Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

REQUISITES

Advisory: Level 1 Reading and Level 1 Writing

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. understand the literary elements of plot, structure, character, theme, and imagery.
  2. apply the literary elements of plot, structure, character, theme, and imagery to a specific literary work.
  3. explain the extent to which literature mirrors or shapes historical and social attitudes with particular emphasis on the roles, images, and concerns of ethnic groups as expressed in literature.
  4. understand the major contributions these ethnic groups have made to American literature.
  5. analyze race as it relates to literature.
  6. describe the major themes, forms, and trends in ethnic literature.
