READ C036 Developmental Reading

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

This reading course helps students improve their reading skills. Emphasis is placed on development of word recognition, vocabulary, paragraph analysis, and comprehension.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to

  1. recognize and employ new vocabulary items.
  2. use a variety of word attack strategies such as phonic analysis, word part identification, dictionary use, and context clue recognition.
  3. comprehend paragraphs more readily by identifying topics, main ideas, and supporting details of paragraphs.
  4. recognize paragraph organizational patterns such as comparison/contrast, cause and effect, time order, definition and example.
  5. recognize transitional words and explain how they relate ideas in sentences and paragraphs.
  6. read at an increased rate.
  7. read more actively by marking text and making useful marginal notes.
  8. demonstrate comprehension over a longer period of time.
  9. understand and apply ideas in readings to one’s own life experiences.
