READ C046 Improving Reading Skills

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students will learn to analyze paragraphs and essays for stated and unstated main ideas, identify supporting material, distinguish patterns of organization, recognize words and phrases that show relationships of ideas, make reasonable inferences, and draw logical conclusions.

REQUISITES

Prerequisites: READ C036 or Level 3 reading

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. identify the topic and main idea of paragraphs and short essays.
  2. identify the supporting points of a main idea in a paragraph or the central point of an essay.
  3. recognize the pattern of organization in a paragraph or essay.
  4. understand the relationship between an author’s ideas by observing transitional devices.
  5. infer an author’s intended but unstated ideas and form conclusions with greater accuracy.
  6. understand text structure as well as content more efficiently.
  7. read actively by making marginal notes and marking items for future reference.
  8. use dictionaries effectively to recognize and define unfamiliar words and idioms.
  9. ascertain the meanings of unfamiliar words from the context of a passage.
  10. write on and discuss articles, essays, stories and book-length works.
