Work-Based Learning Virtual Learning Communities Integration OutreachProject Hope HouseProject Hope House is part of the Interdisciplinary Studies curriculum at Cerro Coso. It is a community service learning class that is designed to train college students in strategies to become tutors in local elementary, middle and high schools. Students spend three hours a week in class and they spend three hours a week tutoring in local schools. The goal of Project Hope House is to address the needs of the youth of today and seeks to offer them guidance and stand as role models to those seeking for somewhere to turn, away from gangs and negative influences. Project Hope House is interested in helping to build a community that focuses on the good, and that has hope for its future. Dr. Donald Rosenberg is the faculty advisor to Project Hope House and is continually active in the community in helping it reach higher heights. Dr. Rosenberg encourages the members to become an integral part of the community and to be involved in building the hope of our youth. To complement Project Hope House, Cerro Coso also offers a Dynamics of Community Development course which provides training and preparation to students who are interested in community mentoring programs designed to assist school age children with acquiring tools and strategies to combat violence, ethnic and racial discrimination, and to deal effectively with other social problems. Students have the opportunity to advance over time to assume greater responsibilities, becoming a group leader in the interactive sessions at the elementary, middle and high schools. They may also exercise a leadership role in organizing and implementing community forums and youth activities.
Both of these courses in the Interdisciplinary Studies curriculum offer
students hand-on experience working with members of the community to bring
them closer to their educational goals. By being able to interact with the
community they are able to witness and apply the theories they learn in the
classroom. This experience can be applied towards a variety of career goals
and will provide students with a real-world knowledge of their field of
interest. |
